Igola Hydropower Plant

Information

The Igola Hydropower Plant is a small-scale run-of-river hydroelectric project located in the Njombe Region of Tanzania. The plant forms part of the broader Luponde Hydroelectric Power Project, an initiative aimed at expanding renewable energy generation and improving electricity access across the Southern Highlands of Tanzania.

With an installed capacity of approximately 2.0 MW, Igola contributes to the wider Luponde hydropower development, which has a combined generation capacity of approximately 2.9 MW. In September 2025, the project achieved a significant milestone through its successful connection to Tanzania’s national grid operated by TANESCO, enabling the delivery of clean and reliable electricity to surrounding communities.

The project plays an important role in supporting social and economic development within nearby rural areas by improving access to stable electricity for households, schools, healthcare facilities, and local businesses. By increasing the availability of renewable energy, the plant contributes to reducing dependence on charcoal and other traditional energy sources while strengthening regional energy reliability and environmental sustainability.

Developed by Luponde Hydro LTD, the project incorporates sustainable run-of-river hydropower technology designed to minimize environmental impact while maximizing long-term energy efficiency. Mutina Power supports the project through mechanical and electrical installation works, grid interconnection, monitoring systems integration, and ongoing operational support services.

The Igola Hydropower Plant supports Tanzania’s long-term objectives for renewable energy expansion, rural electrification, environmental conservation, and sustainable economic growth.
