The Lugarawa Hydropower Plant is a 1.7 MW small hydropower project located in the Ludewa District of Njombe Region, Tanzania. It was developed to provide reliable electricity to rural, off-grid communities through a 33 kV distribution network. The plant uses a run-of-river system with a two-jet Pelton turbine, a 421 m nominal head, and a 0.5 m³/s maximum discharge, allowing it to generate power in an environmentally friendly way without the need for a large reservoir.
The project plays an important role in rural electrification, supplying clean and reliable energy to more than 20 remote villages. By providing consistent electricity, the plant helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels while supporting local economic activities such as milling, small businesses, and chicken incubators.
As part of Tanzania’s efforts to expand sustainable energy solutions, the Lugarawa Hydropower Plant contributes to improving the social and economic conditions of surrounding communities. By harnessing renewable hydropower resources, it supports long-term development while promoting access to clean and affordable energy.
