The Suma Hydropower Project is a small-scale run-of-river hydroelectric development located on the Suma River in Rungwe District, Mbeya Region, within the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. The project forms part of ongoing efforts to expand renewable energy generation and improve access to reliable electricity across rural communities in the region.
With an installed capacity of approximately 4.0 MW, the plant contributes clean and sustainable electricity to Tanzania’s national grid operated by TANESCO under the Small Power Producer (SPP) framework. The project plays an important role in supporting the country’s transition toward renewable energy while strengthening regional energy security and stability.
The hydropower facility provides significant social and economic benefits to surrounding communities by improving access to stable electricity for households, schools, healthcare facilities, agricultural processors, and local businesses. Through the use of renewable hydropower technology, the project helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower carbon emissions, and promote long-term environmental sustainability.
Developed by Suma Hydro Limited, the project utilizes an environmentally friendly run-of-river system incorporating advanced underground HDPE pipeline infrastructure designed to minimize environmental impact and preserve the natural landscape. Mutina Power supports the project through mechanical and electrical installation works, grid interconnection, monitoring systems integration, and ongoing operational support services.
